Get a second opinion. Is your dentist an orthodontist? You need the opinion of one. They can tell much by looking, from what I've heard.

When I was naughty and refused to floss as often as I should, the hygienist measured the amount of doo-doo between my teeth. They put it on my chart. The instrument that she used was not painful.

Does your dental hygienist do that after she cleans your teeth?
