I found this reference on a search engine when I put in Valence Tech:

Summary: This investment in what is still a relatively new technology
demonstrates Japanese manufacturers' confidence in Li-ion technology,
although one manufacturer did admit that production capacities are probably
in reality some 10% to 20% lower than manufacturers announced. And during
1995, LTC constructed a demonstration manufacturing facility (12 400
square feet) that will enable it to.

Hmmmmm.

Another interesting tidbit:

Summary: Sanyo Electric, Japan's fourth-largest Li-ion battery producer that
exports 40% of its Li-ion production, is finding it particularly hard to meet its
export obligations. According to Goldtron, the battery--which was developed
with the assistance of leading Japanese Li-ion battery technologist Toru
Nagaura--will cost 40% less in material costs than Li-ion batteries made using
conventional.
Both of the above articles were from the Business Intelligence Center. I couldn't get access to the documents as they were secured. A lot of work is being done by the BIC as valence's name appears several times in their literature.

Don't know what this means, but....there's research being done.
