Alcatel Unveils New INfusion Short Message Service Center -SMSC- Application for Wireless Networks

BusinessWire, Tuesday, September 22, 1998 at 09:21

ORLANDO, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 22, 1998--Alcatel announced
today the introduction of its INfusion(TM)(SIGMA) Short Message
Service Center (SMSC), providing carriers the ability to store and
forward short messages within ANSI-41 networks, as well as generate
and receive text messages. With the INfusion SMSC, which is scheduled
for general availability later this year, wireless carriers will be
able to deliver a long list of new revenue-generating services to
their subscribers. Alcatel's Switching Products Division, formerly a
part of DSC Communications Corporation, will demonstrate the new SMSC
at PCS '98 this week in Booth No. 413.
Dave Hinshaw, senior vice president of Alcatel's Switching
Products Division, said: "The INfusion SMSC provides what today's
carriers need most: the flexibility to bundle and offer unique new
service options and capabilities. Drawing on the strength of our IN
product family, the SMSC can support such features as messaging,
e-mail and paging alerts directly to the customer's wireless phone."

Examples of service options supported by the new SMSC application
are:

Alert Services - Wireless customers can be notified (via their
wireless handsets) when they have received a new voice mail
message, fax or telex. The service can also be used as a meeting
planner, by giving a reminder of any scheduled appointments.

E-mail Services - Subscribers can receive alerts through their
handsets as they receive new e-mail messages. The same system can
be used to deliver e-mail messages directly to the subscriber's
phone or to route new e-mail messages composed by using a
Personal Digital Assistant (PDA).

Paging Emulation Service - With this option, a paging bureau can
send text messages directly to a customer's wireless phone, so
that a separate paging device is no longer needed.

Network Services - Network enhancement services, including
Intelligent Roaming and Over-the-Air Activation, are provided by
the INfusion SMSC. These services allow carriers to optimize the
efficiency of their networks, improving customer satisfaction and
reducing operating costs.

The INfusion SMSC is a software application residing on Alcatel's
INfusion Service Control Point (SCP) platform, where it can co-reside
with other wireless applications such as Call Screening, Private
Dialing Plan and Wireless Prepaid. The option to support many
different service features on a single platform makes Alcatel's
solution a cost-effective choice for growing wireless carriers.
On Sept. 4, Alcatel completed its acquisition of DSC
Communications Corporation, a Dallas-based telecommunications systems
manufacturer. The INfusion product line is based on DSC's leading edge
Intelligent Network (IN) technology, which enables carriers -- both in
the wireless and wireline markets - to create, customize and deliver
new revenue-generating services to their customers.
A world leader in telecommunications systems and equipment, as
well as related cables and components activities, Alcatel operates in
over 130 countries. Alcatel provides complete solutions and services
to operators, service providers, enterprises and consumers, ranging
from backbone networks to user terminals. For more information, visit
