OT. I believe one of the first German "philologists"--early linguists--went to Finland and did a study to create a dictionary or something. He pointed at things like a chair and asked people what they were called. He came to the conclusion that the people were exceedingly dumb, because they kept calling the chair different names and didn't seem to remember what the proper word for it was--he didn't realize they were just using different word forms like you mentioned!
