When you peel it back to the essentials, the gravamen of the complaint against Hornstine isn't that she may have been graded higher by her tutors than she would have been in regular class but that she didn't have to take gym due to her disability. She and her nearest competitors have straight A's, but her GPA is weighted higher because AP classes get extra weight. There is no AP gym, so an A in gym doesn't count as high as an A in, say, AP physics.

I've been thinking all along that this was a tempest in a teacup. Who really cares whether someone has a 4.689 versus 4.634 (her nearest competitor) other than the students themselves and their parents and supporters?

That is, until the plagiarism scandal.

I've read my kids the riot act about plagiarism, because it's so devastating, and so easy to avoid. Paraphrase or attribute, and even if you paraphrase you should attribute anyway, usually.

If Hornstine wasn't taught to avoid plagiarism then I am distinctly unimpressed by the quality of her education.
