I think it is fairly common. And I think the reason it happens so often with inane ditties is there's a formula for it. Creators of radio jingles and writers of Top 40 hits of the bubblegum variety know all about it. They have a way of having their simple little tune stick with you, I think it's been studied.

It happens with more complicated music too, thankfully. There is a poster on SI who says she can hear full symphonies sometimes. Now THAT'S a gift. :)

Did you ever go through a day when certain things you see or hear set off a tune in your head? Usually it's just the first few opening lines and they're songs that you like.
