Will Geer's part was Bearclaw, and was based on a real person who was an associate of John Johnson, the original Liver Eatin' Johnson.

I've seen it at least ten twelve times myself. The only part that I couldn't handle was Redford catching fish with his bare hands in an ice covered stream. That just ain't going' to happen.

But Hollywood seems to think it's possible. There was a scene like that in The Magnificent Seven too.
