I believe that MSFT goes a step further and reserves for product features promised in future maintenance and nonrevenue generating releases. The real benefit is deferring taxes, around 50%. This literally compounds the benefit.

Wish more public companies were run in the same manner anyone with common sense would run their private company. Unfortunately many public companies prefer to increase their taxes by inflating earnings and deferring expense through tactics that include pulling sales in from the next quarter and software depreciation respectively.

Anyone know of other companies that use this reserve tactic, avoid pulling sales in, and expense software development?
