Jump Starting Interoperable Set-tops: CableLabs Launches OpenCable

<Picture><Picture><Picture>

Cable ops are a huge step closer to seeing interoperable set-top boxes following CableLabs' launch of a project to help vendors deploy a new generation of advanced set-tops that will work in any cable system. CableLabs says OpenCable, unveiled Wednesday, is patterned after the industry's Data-Over-Cable Service Interface Specification process. CableLabs insists the project "isn't meant to hold anybody back," but you can bet CableLabs execs want to ensure that key set-top vendors like and newcomer Microsoft [MSFT] won't dominate the market with proprietary set-top technology. "In order to spur demand for new services that would take advantage of the new set-top architecture. advanced set-top boxes should have functionality within a common framework that allow different levels of complexity," said MediaOne pres/COO William Schleyer, a member of the CableLabs board of directors. CableLabs says the OpenCable effort will include an intellectual property pool and a certification process for testing vendor compliance. OpenCable's first task will be to evaluate responses to an RFI sent to computer and consumer electronic vendors seeking input on the open specification process and the creation of a draft specification for advanced set-tops.
