Feds issue first new drilling permit since blast

The first new offshore oil and gas drilling permit since a drilling ban was put in place was issued by federal officials to Apache Corp., the AP said:
Apache spokesman Bill Mintz said company officials complied with all the new requirements and the permit was granted Friday.
Work already has begun on the natural gas well, which is being drilled in about 50 feet of water off the southeast Texas coast, Mintz said.
Interior Department spokeswoman Kendra Barkoff confirmed that Apache has complied with the rules and received a permit.
Deep-water drilling permits remain under lock and key but the shallow-water ban was lifted in June with a new list of environmental requirements. Many in the industry said the new requirements essentially kept the ban in place.
Apache also has a shallow-water oil drilling permit that it is waiting to hear on.
