Market Makers' sole purpose in life is do nefarious things to those stocks I'm in, so I'm sure what you say has merit. Every stock has a number of MM's who "make the market" in that particular issue.We normally see only the "best" bid and the "best" ask from the several bids that may be active at any one time.Several MM's may be bidding for shares at 41 3/8 while one is bidding 41 3/4 (for some nefarious purpose).When his bid is accepted,the next best bid may be at 41 3/4,so that is the bid that is displayed.No one can explain the thought process of a Market Maker--we only know he is basically evil and lusts after our hard earned money.
