UTILITIES
'...Rick Cowles, my predecessor in this column, also pointed out that utilities are also consumers in the supply chain. Significant disruptions in transportation, finance, or personal lives in 2000 will eventually hurt the utilities too. If this happens, the effect will be to see one plant, transmission line, or transformer at a time being removed from service because of supply difficulties. Message 5032440
POWERONLINE: 'Taming the Millennium Bug Although many in the industry have begun resolving software issues related to the year 2000, many are concerned about so-called embedded systems. Some microprocessors, chips, and other real-time operating systems may be unable to interpret the two-digit "00" for the year 2000. The system may either define "00" as the year 1900 or revert to the default year that was specified when it was manufactured. .... Error! Bookmark not defined.
'For example, the electric utilities industry recently has embarked on a massive Year 2000 education and action campaign for electric companies large and small. The campaign stresses the need for the free sharing of information to ensure that no single, non-compliant Y2K company can bring down any other company as a result of a mutual dependence on the same power-distribution grids and systems. Any failure here may lead to power shortages or power rationing. Error! Bookmark not defined.

'The great problem in utility plants, Sen. Bennett said, is finding all the microchip systems ''embedded'' in the machinery, then testing them once they are repaired or replaced. ''You think you've got them all found, crank it up for the test and find out you didn't find them all. You fix them, crank it up again for the test and things still don't work,'' said Bennett, who recently visited two utility plants. ... Error! Bookmark not defined.
'CHAIRMAN ROBERT Bennett, R-Utah, said a survey his office sent to 10 of the nation's largest electric, oil and gas utilities showed their preparations to ward off Year 2000 bugs were lagging. Eight of the companies had not even finished assessing their automated systems, a first step in tackling the problem, Bennett said. Message 4889066

[HAYES] Cowles on the Y2k book of Ulrich and Hayes Rick Cowles: 'He co-authored "The Year 2000 Software Crisis - Challenge of the Century" (1997) and "The Year 2000 Software Crisis - The Continuing Challenge" (1998) with William Ulrich I fully agree with Rick. I have read this book summer 1997 from front to end and backwards, so to speak. Still use it to get new ideas; or to check things. It gives the Y2k project manager a lot of backing is setting up and carrying out Y2k projects.
