More information about IMGX's competition. A friend in the printing business talked with my father about IMGX for about an hour yesterday. Apparently there was some big convention of printers in Chicago in October. Two companies had displays of internet solutions for the printing industry: Noosh and Impress (sp?). I found the website for Noosh, but I cannot find Impress, which is pretty bizarre if they are supposed to be an emerging player. noosh.com The friend in the business says that shipping is the biggest obstacle for an internet solution for the printing industry. Lumberjacks cut tress into paper. Printers make them glossy and pretty and then they ship the reformulated tress around to customers. Its a heavy, heavy kind of a thing, if you know where I am coming from, and I'd like to share that space with you. (Whoops, this looks like a post for the New Age thread). IMGX will need alliances or subsidiaries in most major cities, but that is no surprise. Lets concede that they have first mover advantage. The deals with Ariba and Commerce are major. But I am hard-pressed to find any sustainable competitive advantage to this business model beyond this. How important is first mover advantage in an industry that already has so many established relationships? I am not sure. OTOH, I do know that communicating back and forth with my printer is a ridiculous waste of time. I will hold my modest position until I get more information one way or another. Your strategy actually makes a lot of sense, unless there is some huge additional news which skyrocket the price. But that seems less likely. More to follow, as I learn more. Tom D
