LONDON, Feb 23 (Reuters) - PPL Therapeutics (LSE: PTH.L - news) , the company that cloned Dolly the sheep, has succeeded in turning a cow's skin cell into a beating heart cell, the Financial Times reported on Friday.
The Scottish group's successful "reprogramming" of a cell could lead to the development of treatment for diseases such as diabetes, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, the paper said.
It would be seen as an important step towards producing stem cells -- simple cells with the capacity to turn into a wide range of more complex tissue types -- without using human embryos.
The company is expected to start its pre-clinical research on human cells in the very near future, with clinical trials around four years away.
The company is due to announce its findings on Friday at the British Fertility Society's Ethics Study day...
