I think that it's interesting to see how news on AVIR progressed over the day:

Jul 27 2001
3:05 PM In Play Aviron (AVIR) 40.80 unch: -- Update -- The FDA panel voted 10 to 4 against recommending FluMist, citing safety issues. AVIR shares remain halted.

Jul 27 2001
2:57 PM In Play Amer Home Prods (AHP) 57.70 -1.23: Issue falls approximately 3 pts on an intraday basis as reports come in that Aviron's (AVIR) FluMist vaccine was not backed by an FDA panel. FluMist was to be co-marketed by AHP.

Jul 27 2001
1:13 PM In Play Aviron (AVIR) 40.80 unch (halted): -- Update -- Issue continues to be held as FDA panel reviews company's FluMist investigational intranasal influenza vaccine. Sources at SG Cowen telling us that the Committee considered the drug efficacious by a vote of 13 to 2. While vote on efficacy in children aged 1-17 was more involved (8 to 7), of the 7 no votes, 5 panelists stated they would have voted in favor if efficacy had children age 1 been excluded. Firm views these results as positive for AVIR.

Jul 27 2001
8:55 AM In Play Aviron (AVIR) 40.80: SG Cowen reports that the first day of FDA FluMist BLA review went well. Believes likely outcome is an approval for healthy children and adults ages 1-64.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out on Monday. Trading based on FDA reviews seems especially appealing for short term option trades since the FDA has a publicly known timeline and time is, of course, a major element of option trading. TradingMarkets.com has a two-part article on "Trading the FDA", part two of which is scheduled to be posted on August 11. Any suggestions for how to follow this group?
