Samsung recently announced a new GPRS handset, to join the Q100: this is the SGH-Q200, a GSM model which operates in the 900 and 1800 MHz frequencies.
The SGH-Q200 has a number of interesting aspects - technology implemented by the inclusion of GPRS (as with the SGH-100), but strongly influenced, in terms of design, by the excellent and highly successful SGH-A300. Like the latter, this phone is a folding model with an external display backlit in a beautiful share of blue. It is the "classic" size Samsung uses for this type of phone: 85 x 48 x 20 mm, and weighs around 90 grams. When you open it there are two main surprises. The first is the large high resolution display which can show up to 16 lines of text, and the second is layout of the keypad, with the kepys arranged in a circle around the navigation key.
The specification for the European market has not yet been confirmed, but it seems likely that this handset will have d4 downlink and 1 uplink slot. The speed should ultimately reach 85 kbps, but this number also depends on the protocols used by operators for their networks.
Initially there will be a WAP microbrowser version 1.1. The other functions include: voice calling, T9 dictionary for easy text messaging, classic alarm, clock and diary functions and the possibility of sending ring tones by text message.
This is an interesting offering from Samsung, which up to now has showed few signs of life in the field of so-called 2.5G handsets. The size of the display, good design (although not as good as that of the A300), and GPRS technology seem to indicate that this will be a great success. But we all have to wait until early next year (when it is likely to be in the shops) to confirm its real value. <<
