TOKYO (AP) -- Toyota Motor Corp. said Thursday its joint venture with China's biggest automaker began production of Toyota's Prius hybrid cars in China. The joint venture, Sichuan FAW Toyota Motor Co., which was established with China FAW Group Corp., started production of the fuel-efficient model in Changchun City, Jilin Province, Toyota said in a press release.
Japan's biggest automaker said it is the first time the model has been produced outside Japan.
Chinese-built Prius cars will be priced at 288,000 yuan ($36,000) and 302,000 yuan ($37,750) and the joint venture aims to sell a total 3,000 cars in 2006, according to Toyota.
Internet orders are scheduled to begin Friday, it said.
