Japan Satellite to supply 3 digital channels to DirecTV

Japan Satellite Broadcasting Inc., operator of the WOWOW broadcast satellite service, will provide three entertainment channels to DirecTV Japan, president Shoji Sakuma said Thursday. The channels - two for movies and one for sports/music - are to air 24 hours a day on DirecTV, which is set to start digital broadcasts in November.

Subscription fees have not yet been set. The broadcaster has applied for a license to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, company sources said.

Sakuma said WOWOW, Japan's largest satellite broadcaster with 230,000 subscribers, is also interested in offering programming to Japan Sky Broadcasting Co. (JSkyB), scheduled to begin service in April.
