12:30 ET Dow +43, Nasdaq -2, S&P +2.28: [BRIEFING.COM] Although advancers still lead decliners at the NYSE and Nasdaq, that lead has narrowed considerably since the market's opening surge as selling activity has picked up in the wake of the tech sector's retreat... Latter has coincided with a pullback among the big-cap stocks and more rhetoric-- most of it cautious sounding-- from Wall Street firms with respect to the near-term prospects for the chip equipment stocks... Merrill Lynch is the latest source to challenge the bullish call from Morgan Stanley that was made before the start of trading... Like CS First Boston, Merrill Lynch said it would use signs of strength as a selling opportunity, and made explicit reference to the large-cap chip equipment companies... Increased selling activity in the oil sector has been another negative influence on the broader market... SOX +2.1%... Nasdaq 100 -0.3%... NYSE Adv/Dec 1758/1138... Nasdaq Adv/Dec 1893/1589.
