In less enlightened times, when scientific concepts could not be not understood, man resorted to rain gods, ghosts of ether, and leeches. Fortunately for us, a few men chose to not remain ignorant. Looks like someone forgot to take his "Strength of Materials 303" engineering course before conjuring up the Conspiracy Spirits. Structural steel doesn't need to melt in order to fail. It only needs to reach a temperature where deformation occurs. That begins around 1000 degrees (depending on, among other things, composition). At 1400, it loses about 80% of its strength. It still has a long ways to go to melt, but in the meantime it can fail by a whole lot of bunches.

Of course, this does not exclude the possibility that the Laws of Physics could also be a well-crafted GOP/Mafia/Boeing plot against the Kennedys. In which case, we can resort back to leeches to cure our misunderstandings.
