I thought that was a very interesting speculation in the news article - Ramirez also said, however, that the U.S. attacks on Ortega had scared off voters, especially as Washington pursues its war against terrorism after the Sept. 11 attacks on America.

``The bin Laden effect was catastrophic,'' he said, adding that many voters feared a new conflict with Washington.

Ay Carumba, Yanqui imperialistas? Naw, we couldn't do nasty things to a sweet nation like Nicaragua, could we? We don't hurt cute cuddly Canucks either, eh?
