On the Nasdaq sign, I was curious myself after seeing the article here on the thread so on Thursday afternoon I spoke with the gentleman mentioned in the NY Times article, Paul Amenta, V.P. of Smartvision. Unfortunately, Paul said that they used Nichia's LED's and not CREE's on the Nasdaq sign. He said that each of the 8,200 modules that make up the display in turn each contain 256 individual pixels, each pixel being made up of 8 LED's (3 red, 3 green and 2 blue). That's where the 16.7 million number in the NY Times article came from (8 LED's x 256 Pixels x 8,200 Modules = 16,793,600 Total LED's)
I asked him if he was familiar with CREE and why they did not use CREE's LED's in their displays. He said that they know of CREE but he believes that because of Smartvision's annual usage (Paul said Smartvision is the worlds largest user of LED's), Nichia's LED's are being used.
He seemed to know that CREE is on the move and mentioned that they are keeping an eye on CREE as a future source of LED's for their displays.
