This is an extremely ominous revelation and warrants another mention:

techstocks.com

It is obvious to me that AOL is doomed. I wondered if I could express that view in a few sentences and this is my attempt. Having an online presence is becoming something of a must for the typical business not unlike being listed in the yellow pages. For that reason, visitors to websites will become increasingly local. National and international points of presence will continue to grow at the current exponential rates in parallel with the growth of local sites. Each site will be setup using off-the-shelf hardware and software and with little or no interaction with any centralized body. Otherwise, forget the whole thing it will never happen. Consumers will pay the phone company or cable company for access, select an internet compatible browser of choice, and perhaps pay for some premium services. Keep in mind the hoaky web pages we use now will soon be replaced by something more like your current desktop -- very soon.

Sadly, AOL's client software is useless for web access, their server software is useless as a web server, their information services are not compatible with internet protocols. They have nowhere near the resources required to meet demand even if a centralized service made sense -- and it doesn't. What they have are 6 million customers and that is certainly worth a great deal. Will they be able to get their current market value of 3.5 billion dollars in exchange for their accounts? Try $100,000,000 on a good day, about a buck a share.

Please e-mail "you are an idiot who knows jack about this company" type of comments but please post rebuttals -- actually the personal attacks are kinda fun to read too.
