Herb Greenberg on Sigma Designs...................

-- Hold the hype: An item here last week said there was chatter that Sigma Designs of Fremont would soon strike a deal to provide its PC video cards to Sony. The cards make it possible for PCs to play back digital video disks.

Well, yesterday Sony announced -- high up in a press release -- that it would use Sigma's Design's card in its DVD upgrade kits for PCs. The odd part of the story: Usually small companies like Sigma, which are trying to get respect from Wall Street, put out splashy press releases hyping deals with big companies like Sony. Sigma, however, was mum. A Sigma spokeswoman says the company does plan to issue a release, but not until it gets approved by Sony, either today or tomorrow.

In typical ``buy on the rumor, sell on the news'' fashion, Sigma, whose stock has doubled in recent weeks, dropped 13 cents yesterday to close at $9.13.
