I keep reading about looking down the barrell of a gun and deciding who was pointing it and how we would react. Been there done that twice. Once with a man with tears rolling down his cheeks and cursing me with anger I had never witnessed. My thoughts were not of fear. They were how can this man blame me for what happened to him. I also had thoughts of self preservation in how to handle the situation. I let him curse me for a length of time long enough to run out of words and never took my ny eyes from his or tried to interupt him.

As he calmed down I told him he really thought I had wronged him so he could kill me and no doubt about it but in killing me he would be destroying not only me but his own family and freedom and possibly be killed for doing so. I informed him I felt just as strongly as he did that I had done no wrong to cause his problem. I suggested the courts were established to decide these situations and if he was right he could sue me for damages.

This led him to thoughts of greed and he cursed me further saying he had the best lawyer in town and he would just sue me and take my business. I just said well I hate to lose my business but I guess it would be better for both us than a killing would be.

He left laughing and wild dreams of owning my business and I of course never heard from him again.

The other time the law stopped him by being nearby at a propitious time.

I operated a drive in market for about 10 years. As most of you will know they are a prime target for armed robbery and murder. My business was in an area near a housing project and there was a series of robberies including 2 other market within a mile of mine. After about 20 robberies including a bank and motel and restaurants they killed the robber during an attempted holdup.

Later that day a customer came in and said I guess you heard about my husband being killed by the police. I asked her why he had skipped me in all the robberies. She said because I had always been kind to his son and given him free candy. Penny suckers had saved me.

Just another example of experiencing that I reap what I sow.

In the years of operating the business I never had a robbery but many a close call where prior treatment of customers saved the day for me.
