Does anyone know when the name "Ethel" first appeared in the lexicon?

I suspect it is the feminine appellation of Ethelred, a good old Anglo-Saxon name. I also seem to recall a similar form in the Viking line.

Ethelred the Unready

Ethelred II is famously known as "the unready". This is usually
believed to mean that he was unprepared, but actually it is from the
Anglo-Saxon "UNREDE" meaning "without counsel", that is without
good advice. Ethelred reigned from 978 to 1016, and was one of the last Anglo-Saxon kings.
