Mary, A lot of people compromised their beliefs and suspended their beliefs in order for him to win.

I'd say that's more so with Democrats. Like you said, politics isn't an exact science, but the conventional wisdom is that Bush won the last election by playing to his core constituency. Meanwhile, no one could quite figure out what Kerry stood for, and as a result he was portrayed as a "flip-flopper."
