Just saw a news broadcast on satellite by the Spanish Television International (TVE) that the new Spanish digital channel (Via Digital) has been completed and will formally launch on September 15. They stated that the project took three months to complete and boasted it was the most technologically advanced digital platform in Europe. Great job Divicom! Does anybody know whose set-top-box will be used for this system? If I recall correctly, Telefonica had selected Divicom based on an existing system which included both head end and Divicon designed set-top-boxes. Is this correct? BTW, Via Digital will originally offer 35 channels. The basic package will be about $20 per month which is significantly less than its Spanish competitor, Canal Satellite Digital (whose major investor is Canal+). At this price point Via Digital could greatly expand the digital market in Spain. However, the golden goose (soccer pay per view rights) is still up for grabs and this outcome could impact who gets the greatest market share. Good luck to all.
