He lacked faith and began to sink. When he remembered his faith, he walked. Plain and simple. Jesus is no magical figure. He was simply demonstrating truths that are timeless. Do you not recall when your parents took the training wheels off of your bicycle? There was a point you believed they were still hanging on and you could not fall, though they had let go. That is the moment of which Jesus shows with Peter. Jesus was not holding him up, but letting him go to walk on his own, whether Peter knew it or not.
