More grumblings in Pelosi's flock

Betsy's Page

While most of the media focuses on grumblings within the Republican Party, let us not forget that, if the Democrats regain control of Congress, they will have their own problems dividing up the spoils. For example, Nancy Pelosi wants to replace Jane Harman as head of the House Intelligence Committee, because Pelosi doesn't think Harman has been tough enough on the Bush administration. Pelosi's idea for a suitable replacement - Alcee Hastings. That would be Alcee Hastings, the impeached federal judge thrown off the bench for taking bribes and lying about it. It is utterly amazing that she would think that a man that the U.S. Senate found guilty of corruption and perjury would be a suitable head for the committee that would hear top secret information about our national security. Her choice of Hastings says enough about Pelosi's qualifications to lead the House.

Robert Novak reports that the Congressional Black Caucus is fighting efforts to retain Harman as Chairman.

<<< Influential House Democrats are quietly challenging Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's edict that her fellow Californian, national security hard-liner Jane Harman, should be dropped as top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee and replaced by left-wing Rep. Alcee Hastings of Florida.

Republican campaign strategists are citing Hastings as typical of the new committee chairmen who would be empowered if the Democrats capture the House in this year's election. Hastings was elected to Congress in 1992 after the House impeached him and the Senate removed him as a federal judge as a result of a bribery case.

Harman has been under attack by Hastings's colleagues in the Congressional Black Caucus and other left-wing Democrats as too soft on President Bush's policies. But she has allies who foresee a post-election contest between her and Hastings with the outcome impossible to predict. >>>

And how typical of the Congressional Black Caucus that they are ready to flex their muscles to demand that Hastings get the nod regardless of his qualifications.

Republican strategists are absolutely right to raise the choice of Hastings in the election. The only problem is that 99.9% of people have no idea of who Hastings is or who Jane Harman is.

We can only hope that Pelosi is too premature counting her chairmanships before anyone has even voted yet.
