"Not just data but reality" ... are Olympics a valid 1Q98 concern ?

" In a conference call with analysts, interim Chief Financial Officer Lawrence Ricciardi said the effects of currency cut into IBM's bottom line by 18 cents per share.

Currency levels, a slowdown in Asia and pricing pressures on several product lines are still working against the company in the current quarter.

Those factors, combined with expected expenses for IBM's acquisition of Software Artistry Inc. and its marketing efforts related to the Nagano Olympics, have raised considerable doubt IBM will be able to match its year-ago performance, Ricciardi said. "

Contrary to the old IBM S/370 advertisement is the above only "data" ?

I would like to see the reality of the - 0.18/shr currency differential when IBM pays its Asia expenses with all those USA dollars in 1Q98 .

And a little more "reality" on its 4Q sales for S/390 , RS/6000 and AS/400s . Think maybe some of that was held back for 1Q98 ?

Ever see a report like this from a $84 bln/yr company CFO . If he hedged 1Q98 is set for a positive surprise !
