I would love to visit China someday.....

But I'd have to feel comfortable that I wouldn't suddenly be arrested at the border and held without charges or bail, like several US citizens and/or nationals have suffered.

Fortunately, I'm caucasian so I probably wouldn't have much trouble... But lord help those Chinese-Americans who have the audacity to return for a visit. They can, and are, labeled as spies seemingly at the blink of an eye. Several US citizens are currently in Chinese custody right now, one because he was wrote critical comments in some economic papers he had written while working in Hong Kong.

And just so you don't misconstrue my perspective... I have no problem with the Chinese people. In fact, I consider them to be extremely industrious, hard-working people. I love Chinese food, and I even own a well-blackened wok to prove it. I've dated Chinese girls. And I even worked in a Chinese restaurant when I was a teen.

My problem is with a government that represses its own people's freedoms to the extent that it creates instability in policy and is unaccountable to its own people for the major actions that it engages in.
