Watson found the structure that is part of the secret of life, but it's turning out DNA is only a small part of the total picture. It is totally naive for Watson to make inferences about a population's genes without accounting for what that population's parents and grandparents experienced ( famine, chemicals, stress ) in ways we only dimly now understand.
Naive? At the time? I think not. What you want is for Watson (and Crick and Pauling and ... about every other biochemist then alive) to be psychic.
