Second GOP-owned Broadcaster Guilty of Cheating

Democrats call for boycott of broadcaster

SACRAMENTO -- In retaliation to a Fresno broadcaster's decision to give away air time to Republican candidates, Democratic leaders in the Central Valley called Tuesday on viewers and advertisers to boycott TV and radio stations owned by the Pappas Telecasting Cos. Organized by Assemblywoman Sarah Reyes, D-Fresno, the boycott is being urged on political Web sites, through a phone bank and in election appearances by candidates. The effort comes in the wake of an offer from Pappas to give 13 Republican county committees a total of $325,000 worth of free air time to promote candidates on its stations. Democrats say the contributions are illegal and violate federal laws that require broadcasters to provide equal time to opposing candidates. Company officials insist the offer does not break any laws nor does it trigger requirements that Democrats be offered equal time. "There will be an economic consequence to Pappas Broadcasting," Reyes said. "It's a matter of fairness." (AP
