Illegal immigrant care at Dallas hospital cost $22.4 million

Associated Press

DALLAS — Medical care received by illegal immigrants at Parkland Memorial Hospital cost more than $22.4 million this fiscal year, officials said.

The estimate released Tuesday, which doesn't include emergency treatment, marked the first time Parkland has quantified the amount Dallas County taxpayers have spent on the care of illegal immigrants.

Parkland has sent foreign countries bills for indigent citizens who received care at the hospital. A federal program disburses $250 million annually among providers of emergency care for illegal immigrants, but the program does not include reimbursement for outpatient or clinic care provided by hospitals.

About 50 illegal immigrants are treated each day in Parkland's emergency room, said Jim Perry, a vice president of revenue cycle.

"We're doing a much better job of capturing that information," he told the hospital's board of managers.

Hospitals had shied away from asking patients about their legal status to avoid causing them to leave. Now they must keep track to qualify for the government payments, so they're checking Social Security numbers to try to determine if the person is in the country illegally.

Parkland won't turn away sick or injured people who live in Dallas County, regardless of their legal status, said Dr. Ron Anderson, Parkland's president and chief executive.Anderson said.
