"The ancient Greek culture that you idealized wouldn't have regarded that as scandalous."
Ancient Greece was a rag tag collection of City States. Socrates was an Athenian, Gorgias was from Leontine, Prodicus from Cean and Hippias was an Elean. The morality was as diverse as the cuisine.
When Socrates addressed the judges at his trial he addressed them as Athenians.
"I, therefore, should also glory and think highly of myself, if I had a scientific knowledge of these things; but this, O Athenians, is certainly not the case."
The accusation against Socrates was as follows: "Socrates, it says, acts unjustly, corrupting the youth; and not believing in those Gods in which the city believes, he introduces other novel daemoniacal natures."
Like Socrates asked Gorgias I would ask you.
“…why don’t you tell us yourself what the craft you’re an expert in is, and hence what we’re supposed to call you?”
"Socrates believes that rhetoric alone is not a moral endeavor. Gorgias is criticized because, “he would teach anyone who came to him wanting to learn oratory but without expertise in what’s just…” Socrates believes that people need philosophy to teach them what is right, and that oratory cannot be righteous without philosophy."
This is a small list of ancient Greek cities, including colonies outside Greece proper. Note that there were a great many Greek cities in the ancient world. In this list a city is defined as a single population center. These were often referred to as poleis in the ancient world, although the list is not limited to "proper" poleis. Also excluded from the list are larger units, such as kingdoms or empires.
