Jun. 7 2011 - 9:51 am | 0 views | 0 recommendations | 0 comments

OmniVision shares are up sharply this morning after the Taiwan-based news site DigiTimes reported that the company has “grabbed a majority” of the total CMOS image sensor orders placed by Apple for the fifth generation iPhone. The report is attributed to “market sources.”

The story says OmniVision will supply 90% of the image sensors for the new generation phone, with Sony to take the rest. The new phone will reportedly have an 8 MP camera.

The DigiTimes report said total wafer starts in the third quarter at OmniVision foundry partner Taiwan Semiconductor will be up more than 40% sequentially.

The report also said that Avago has landed power amplifier orders for the WCDMA version of the phone, according to the same unspecified sources.

OVTI this morning is up $2.15, or 6.8%, to $33.91; AVGO is up 49 cents, or 1.5%, to $33.82.
