US General Apologises over Abu Ghraib

By Alan Brain

From the AP via The Australian : The commander of US-run prisons in Iraq apologised today for the “illegal or unauthorised acts” committed by a “small number of our soldiers” at the Abu Ghraib prison where photographs showed Iraqi prisoners were abused by smiling American guards.Major General Geoffrey Miller also said he had invited the international Red Cross and the Iraqi Interior and Human Rights Ministries to open offices at Abu Ghraib. He reiterated that some interrogation techniques would be halted because of the scandals and the use of others would be limited. “I would like to apologise for our nation and for our military for the small number of soldiers who committed illegal or unauthorised acts here at Abu Ghraib,” Mr Miller told a group of Arab and Western reporters taken by the military on a tour of the prison. “These are violations not only of our national policy but of how we conduct ourselves as members of the international community,” Mr Miller added.
