Trident Introduces Cyber9397DVD Industry's First AGP Mobile 3D Graphics Accelerator With Hardware-Assisted DVD

Trident Once Again Sets Standard For The PC Graphics Industry

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 17, 1997-- Trident Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:TRID) today announced the Cyber9397DVD, the first high-performance LCD flat-panel 3D multimedia accelerator including DVD playback acceleration to fully conform to Intel's AGP (Accelerated Graphics Port) specifications.

To meet OEMs' demand for the latest DVD playback functionality, Trident incorporates hardware-assisted DVD into a single graphics accelerator. The Cyber9397DVD offers outstanding 2D and 3D graphics acceleration coupled with Trident's ClearTV TV-Out display technology and support for digital TV encoders with Macrovision 7-X.

``Our whole Cyber line continues to perform well. The Cyber9397DVD is a follow-up product of the Cyber9397, which has gained design wins from IBM, Fujitsu, Power Computing and others,'' said Hans Olsen, vice president of graphics marketing for Trident. ``This latest development highlights our partnerships within the industry, and the technical expertise of our staff to meet tough deadlines. The Cyber9397DVD marks two technical breakthroughs: putting AGP graphics onto notebooks, and accelerating DVD on a single notebook graphics chip.''

To implement the DVD playback function, Trident provides full-motion compensation hardware, full-motion video and AC3 decoding on the chip. Other features include: dual hardware windows for videoconferencing, multiple monitor support, Trident's high-quality TrueVideo display algorithm, motion video capture and extensive TFT and DSTN panel support.

The Cyber9397DVD supports an AGP interface for high-speed 3D image rendering and a 32-bit PCI 2.1 compliant local bus interface that includes bus-mastering capability. The chip allows both 66MHz and 133MHz AGP with sideband support to facilitate high-speed, high-quality texture fetching from system memory. The on-chip setup engine offloads up to 50% of the graphics processing from the CPU, permitting it to handle more extensive processing functions in real time.

The Cyber9397DVD was designed for 3.3V low power operation with independent power planes for the various internal functions and high integration within the chip's configuration. The Advanced Power Management capabilities can be activated through both hardware timers and pins, or software control bits. The entire graphics system, or any part of it, can be set into one of the power down states: standby, suspend or off. On-chip functional blocks are powered down when not in use.

The Cyber9397DVD will be sampling in Q4 1997 and is scheduled for production in Q1 1998, with a suggested price of $40 per 10,000 units.
