Siemens intros modem chip

By

Siemens Components Inc., headquartered in Cupertino, Calif., has rolled out a software-programmable front-end chip for analog modems that the company claims will enable a uniform hardware set, regardless of national telephone standards.

The company's Analog Line Interface Solution (ALIS) integrates transformer, hybrid, and ring-detect functions with a DSP-based codec and a fully programmable digital access arrangement that is able to adjust to the telephone protocol of any country in the world, according to Siemens.

ALIS can be used as a front-end device for facsimile or a variety of modem applications up to 56 Kbits/s. The two-chip device is available for $9.25 in 10,000s, and is slated for volume production by the end of this year.
