It is considered "standard procedure" to reformat the drives before every new project. Whether this is actually done in real life is a different matter. However, in my experience, I have only had one instance where a hard drive has failed with digital audio, and files were lost. This happened on a film project and the drive in question was an older (at least 5 years), unknown brand 540MB housed in a Dynatek box. Removable media like the Jaz is just not as reliable as a real hard drive. Until, the technology improves, I won't trust it.
