The Danes stood behind the people who published the cartoons because of the principle of freedom of speech. We could have taken a position of disliking the content, but agreeing with the principle. For a small nation support - or criticism - by the US is a big thing. In this case the US engaged in pandering - and did not stand up for what is one of our own basic principles.
