A snippet from a WSJ item on missile defense today:

"The piece that is farthest along is a short-range missile-defense system called Patriot. It was used unsuccessfully in the first Gulf war. [After being applauded by the Pentagon for knocking several Iraqi Scud missiles out of the sky, studies of the weapon's performance after the Gulf war showed that it accurately hit few, if any, of the enemy projectiles. Upon leaving office a decade later, former Defense Secretary William Cohen said the Patriot "didn't work."]"

I remember when the first retractions about the Patriots started to come out. I was early in my foreign service career, and resolved not to believe pretty much anything I heard from the Pentagon after that, not at face value.

Given this administration's record of relentless spin, I admit to applying the same doctrine to just about anything they have to say in public statements. Disclosing facts is not high on the agenda - like publicizing a secret program then howling like banshees when someone else publicizes it too, calling it operational. Just more BS spin from the Beltway fudge factory.
