Comcast Online Communications Announces The First-Ever Broadband Internet Portal.
January 4, 1999 -- Comcast Online Communications today announced that it is debuting the first-ever broadband portal providing high-speed internet users around the world with easy access to broadband content, commerce applications, tools, community resources, and other information at www.OnBroadband.com. Comcast Online is a leader in broadband services delivered via cable modems through its Comcast @Home service. However, the new site will provide a broadband resource for all internet users with high-speed connections, such as cable modems, ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network), DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), or wireless/satellite internet services.
This first-ever broadband portal provides specific sections for broadband consumers including a variety of multimedia enhanced information and entertainment including video enhanced shopping, up-to-the-minute news, live music, multi-player games, virtual reality tours, live sporting events and sports coverage, just to name a few. OnBroadband also provides information about broadband service providers and hardware manufacturers, as well as links to the best consumer software for broadband connections, such as video conferencing and IP telephony.
In addition, the site will be an invaluable resource to industry professionals and business users. It provides access to the best business-to- business e-commerce resources, showcases multimedia designers and interactive agencies, and guides users to the preeminent news sites, chat, and newsgroups about broadband.
The revolutionary new site offers a collection of more than one thousand of the most robust and interactive broadband sites on the internet to all high-speed internet users. Similar to traditional Web portals, OnBroadband will evolve from a program guide of Web sites to a multi-dimensional programming network with integrated multimedia content, commerce, communications, and community resources. It will also provide an invaluable channel for media advertisers who want to reach coveted broadband consumers and business users with messages that are unrestricted by Web banners.
"This exclusive broadband site will create an exciting new destination where all high-speed internet users can more thoroughly enjoy the incredible variety of broadband content that currently exists on the world wide Web, but may be overlooked,'' said Richard Rasmus, Vice President and General Manager, Comcast @Home. "We believe OnBroadband will become a new hot spot for all broadband users from Comcast @Home customers to users of other high-speed internet services. This will be the place to watch the internet evolve,'' added Rasmus.
"Our goal is to continuously identify the best and most exciting broadband content and applications that are fragmented across the internet and present them in a user-friendly format,'' said Gaurav Suri, General Manager Content & Director Business Development, Comcast Online. "There are over a million residential high speed internet users in the US, and there will be over two million by the end of next year. OnBroadband is the first comprehensive start page designed specifically for them,'' added Suri.
"Motorola applauds Comcast's innovative development to enhance the consumer's cable modem experience,'' said Dick Day, Corporate Vice President, Motorola, Inc. "OnBroadband.com offers consumers a unique site to learn about and realize the monumental benefits of cable modem technology,'' added Day.
"The OnBroadband site will enhance navigation within Comcast's portfolio of interactive entertainment and e-commerce services, and will establish a new entry point into the emerging broadband Internet. Cisco is thrilled to be working with Comcast to build a new world infrastructure that can deliver more exciting and visually engaging experiences to Comcast @Home subscribers and broadband visitors,'' said Paul D. Bosco, General Manager of Cicsco's Cable Products and Solutions Group.
"Comcast's cutting-edge interactive video content and programming delivers unique, intuitive and entertaining experiences to consumers,'' said Joanna Shields, Chief Executive Officer, Veon, Inc. "Veon is working with Comcast Online to provide HyperVideo capabilities to enable next generation interactive video E-commerce and entertainment for broadband users.''
