I think that's where you find that Jews have to keep kosher; that Jewish kids need to go thru bar mitzvah; how a wife and husband are to treat each other etc.

Actually, a lot of that stuff comes from the Old Testament, and the Talmud just "interprets" it. It's a really, really huge document -- 63 books of really small text with information and arguments from thousands of people -- it's in debate form. Emile's probably right -- there probably is a rabbi out of the thousands in there that said really negative stuff about how Jews should treat non-Jews. However, what he doesn't say is that in most of those cases, there probably are a dozen other rabbis in the same context that refute the statement.

I don't take that kind of stuff all that seriously. These books like the Koran and the Talmud were written at a time when a religious leader was just as apt to be a warrior as well. And its not surprising that Emile 'chooses' to omit that part where some Rabbi refutes the aggressive stance of another Rabbi. BTW what was the reason for being with the Talmud.........to explain ambiguous portions of the Bible?

Elroy asked if the interpretation of the Talmud varies depending on geographic location. I thought it had more to do with the three divisions/sects of Judaism.....orthodox, conservative and reformed. Do you know the answer to that?
