Great post Tim - thanks. And Youlu - your last post regarding the VSC8116&17 is exactly what Tim is talking about. It connects to PMC chips (mostly older 5355s and 5312s as an interface to the optical network.) As such it is complimentary. Tim, isn't it also true that by adding an intelligent Layer-2 technology to SONET rings you add the advantages of statistical multiplexing and are thus able to provide a much more efficient use of bandwidth for data links than with traditional TDM equipment? As an example, connecting a 10mb LAN to an STS-1 pipe (51 mbps) wastes 41 mbps of bandwidth. As you mention, the serialization for voice was meant for the 1,2,3,1,2,3 tdm multiplexing of the PSTN. Keep posting when you can - you're technical expertise is very much welcome. Bulldozer
