Morse. 1893: Joseph von Mering first synthesizes acetaminophen and observes its analgesic and antipyretic properties. 1947: Researchers discover that acetaminophen is a major metabolite and the active agent in the body for some older drugs like acetanilide and phenacetin. 1950s: Acetaminophen becomes freely available, and McNeil Laboratories introduces Children's Tylenol Elixir, the first prescription pain reliever without aspirin. 1955: Tylenol is introduced as a brand name by McNeil Laboratories, derived from its chemical name. 1960: Tylenol is made available over the counter.
