No, I was assuming that the platoon in question would be equipped with both. They are both reasonably cheap and portable. Given the Soviet investment in heavy equipment, that would make sense.

Yes. The Stinger was expected to be pretty effective against known Soviet countermeasures and pilot training. In the early '80s, Soviet pilots were still expected to do as told and to follow the Book. Soviet tactics were shaped by the battles they won during WWII. So massive attacks, huge losses of life as they swarm their opponents. Showing tactical brilliance was not encouraged and probably would make you suspect. Of something.
