Swiss officials say the Egyptian charter airline company Flash Airlines, whose Boeing 737 crashed into the Red Sea with the loss of 148 lives, had been banned from flying into Switzerland for over a year.

The Swiss Civil Aviation Authority says the ban was imposed after safety problems came to light during an inspection of one of the airline's planes in October 2002.

A routine inspection of one of Flash Airlines planes at Zurich airport revealed a series of safety failures, according to the Swiss Civil Aviation Authority.

Specific details are confidential but the Authority says the problems constituted violations of international safety regulations and were enough to impose an immediate ban on Flash Airlines flying into Swiss airports or through Swiss air space.

Other European countries including France were informed of Switzerland's concerns about Flash Airlines, because the Swiss sent the details of the banning order to the European Aviation Authorities.
