Walt,

Your are right--avoidance isn't the answer. Ignoring disruptive people isn't the answer. If it were that simple, there would be no need for us to discuss this subject. Avoidance only allows the perpetrator to control and dominate a thread. Worse yet, allowing a perpetrator to control a thread drives away other people who may have
valuable and insightful information to contribute.

One obvious problem with the particular thread you mentioned is that the person who started the thread has apparently disappeared. My thinking is that who ever starts a thread is the one in the best position to control, or at least monitor, what goes on in the thread. The absence of that person contributed to relative anarchy within the Iomega thread. If a thread is like a ship, it needs a captain. If a thread is like an airplane, it needs a pilot.

I don't know the entire history of the so-called "main" Iomega thread, but in my humble estimation, the thread was probably doomed because the initiator of the thread left the scene. Anarchy and disorder are predictible results of a leaderless activity such as the Iomgea thread you mentioned. Especially if children are involved! :-)
